Powell's NATO mood
Last evening, we noted that Secretary of State Colin Powell was open about criticizing the NATO members who refused to help train Iraqi security forces in Iraq. Today, the State Departments news sit has Powell smiling broadly:
"I think NATO is alive and well," Powell said during a press conference following a meeting of NATO foreign ministers in Brussels, Belgium. He also spoke of President Bush's commitment to the transatlantic relationship and the recently announced trip to Europe in February 2005, where he will attend meetings at NATO and European Union headquarters in Brussels. He did criticize the Europeans for not spending for their own security needs. Well, they've got us, and see Victor David Hanson's piece about "Old Europe = Tolkien's Ents."
