Well, The Australian reports that the U.S. will be represented at an Arafat should he eventually turn in his earthly terror tools:
The Bush administration is considering sending Assistant Secretary of State Williams Burns, and possibly others, to Mr Arafat's funeral.That will take place, in all probability, in Egypt.
Mahmoud Abbas is set to take over Arafat's seemingly timeless terror organization, the P.L.O.
And Hamas is ready for a power grab should Arafat keel.
An assistant secretary is the highest level the President would want to send to such an event, if he felt he had to send anyone. (I think he does.) We saw Abbas act only when he was under Arafat's thumb; who knows if he is still the dead-ender his boss was.
One cannot negotiate with Hamas. Period.
