Mehlman at RNC

President Bush has named BC04 Manager Ken Mehlman to be the new chairman of the Republican National Committee. AP writes: "The Republican National Committee formally selects the party chair early next year, and Bush's recommendation holds enormous sway." Actually, Bush runs the party. The vote is a formality, allowing the signature of the paychecks.

Taking over the party in an off-year could be seen as a letdown after managing a Presidential campaign, but it's a good sign that they're keeping the Harvard-educated lawyer on the team. He can run for governor of Maryland in 2006, and then we can see if he's interested in the White House in 2012 (A little Tim Russert imitation for your entertainment.)

I think that there's already a Republican governor in place in Maryland; I don't think Erlich's term limited, since he's just finishing up his first term. I don't think he wants to pick that primary fight.
