Marine Kills Unarmed Insurgent

A U.S. Marine shot an apparently unarmed combatant when the guy did not appear to be threatening anything, and NBC snagged it on vid. Some radio talk hosts have been going off with the "kill all them stinkin' Iraq ingrates" spiel, but that's not what we want.
"We follow the law of armed conflict and hold ourselves to a high standard of accountability," said Lt. Gen. John F. Sattler, commanding general of the 1st Marine Expeditionary Force. "The facts of this case will be thoroughly pursued to make an informed decision and to protect the rights of all persons involved."
The United States follows the rules of engagement – though "civilized combat" is, of course, an oxymoronic thing to conceive – and we have to. If we don't, we become that against which we are fighting.

So we'll have the military investigate, let the military determine what if any protocols were violated, and mete whatever punishment is warranted, if any.

Evidently, some Iraqis are wailing that such behavior is "something forbidden in Islam." Please pardon my language, but that's bullshit. If Islam permits fighting from mosques, roadside bombs, shooting people from behind, hostage taking, and severing the heads of innocents, I don't think the rules of Islam apply. We have to have Islam reconcile its dubious code of ethics at the same time as they ask us to have our military account for what they see as a double standard.
