"Australia! Australia! Amen."
Pardon the Python, but I feel good for our allies down under. With 2/3rds of the vote counted, it appears that Australia has reelected the Liberal Party government of Prime Minister John Howard with 52-percent of the vote, with the opposition Labor Party receiving 47-percent.
John Howard is as anti-Saddam Hussein/pro-Iraq war as is President Bush, and some ABB commentators had suggested that a Howard loss could presage a Bush defeat.
The main issues were said to be the economy, tariffs, and logging, which indicates that the war is not an negative issue where there aren't Bush haters.
Opposition to the war in the United States is, for the most part, really opposition to President Bush.
Here is a grudging piece from the French write AFP regarding the President's congratulatory phone call to Prime Minister Howard.
